DESCRIPTION
This vintage engraving is a cartoon depicting a group of thieves robbing a house while others distract with music, in England in the early 1700s. It is the creation of William Hogarth (1697 - 1764), the brilliant English cartoonist, a work he titled "Industry & Idleness". He had a great sense of humor, as seen in the characters here, though his message was serious. This is one of a series of allegory cartoons by Hogarth illustrating the major social issues of his day. Engraved by T. Cook & Son after Hogarth's painting. It was published in an 1810 collection of Hogarth's work and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
