Flocks of men and small boys carrying their ‘guys’ around the streets of London to collect ”a penny for the Guy” on the 5th November. The effigies would be burnt with great rejoicing in celebration of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot (the Catesby Plot) which was assisted by Guy Fawkes in 1605, when an attempt was made to destroy the House of Lords and King James I in protest at the persecution of Catholics in Great Britain. Fawkes was hanged, drawn and quartered as punishment. In the middle of the drawing two Tractarians wander the streets hoping to convert London’s citizen’s to more Catholic forms of worship.
