The picture has the caption "Robert Raikes interceeds for one of his scholars. " Robert Raikes ( 1736 – 1811) was an English philanthropist and Anglican layman, noted for his promotion of Sunday schools. He persuaded employers to let children off work on Sunday to learn to read and write. Pre-dating state schooling and by 1831 schooling 1,250,000 children, they are seen as the first schools of the English state school system. In the magazine "The Sunday at home" 1880
